Great coffee on the go

If you're familiar with Vex you'll know we're always chasing that perfect cup of coffee, the perfect bean with the perfect recipe and the perfect brew method. If there's a new viral recipe on instagram we want to give it a go, or a new brewer doing the rounds we want to try it. But that doesn't mean to say you can't make a great coffee without all the gear and sub gram precision!

All you need to make an excellent cup is is good coffee. Sure, if you used your scales and a £500 worth of grinder and gear you'd get an even better cup, but coffee's all marginal gains, and sometimes we just need a nice cup of coffee without the luxury of having all the time in the world a cupboard full of gear.

All you need:

  • Some great ground coffee (which you smartly ground earlier or bought pre-ground)
  • A spoon
  • Your brewer of choice (the simpler the better)

For this example we're going to use the cafetière, it may look like a marvel of mechanical engineering but it's as simple as it gets and there's no filters to mess about with.

So here it is the simple cafetière recipe:

  1. Boil the jug (or kettle if you're not kiwi)
  2. Fill the cafetière with enough boiled water for however many cups you're doing
  3. put some coffee in (if you're using a vex spoon about 1 and half spoonfuls per cup is a good starting point)
  4. Give it a gentle stir to allow the coffee to sink from the surface
  5. Leave it for a bit (2+ minutes, immersion brewing like this is very forgiving when it comes to leaving it too long)
  6. Push down the doodah on top
  7. Pour into cups
  8. Enjoy!

Ok, so there's probably a few more steps there than you thought but most of them are for comic effect.

This is a fantastic way to make coffee when you're away from home, like at work or out in the wild (just remember to take a thermos of fresh boiled water with you).
